Every spring the YWCA of Syracuse & Onondaga County, Inc. partners with diversity champions across Central New York to host the Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism and Promote Diversity and the Walk to End Racism. These events are an opportunity to advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. By dedicating ourselves to progress, we strengthen our community today and tomorrow.
2024 Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism & Promote Diversity
The Day of Commitment to Eliminate Racism & Promote Diversity is dedicated to promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. It brings the community together to address injustices that create barriers to opportunity and equity. Our aim is to educate, facilitate discussion, empower, and inspire action for positive change in Central New York and beyond.
The event was held on Thursday, April 25th, at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown. It included a morning workshop and panel discussion presented by leaders in diversity, equity, and inclusion in the CNY community. The day concluded with a celebratory luncheon in the Persian Terrace where we honored three local Champions of Diversity dedicated to creating a more equitable community in Central New York.
Congratulations to our 2024 Champions of Diversity!
Kim Wolf Price, Bond, Schoeneck & King
Dr. Wendy Moy, Syracuse University
Nodesia Hernandez, Onondaga County Legislator
These individuals embody YWCA's mission of eliminating racism, empowering women, and enhancing our community by advancing opportunities for all.
Morning training explored the relationship and intersectionality of trauma and health equity with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. Then, attendees participated in a following panel of local policymakers: Latteef Johnson-Kinesy - Majors Office to Reduce Gun Violence, Sara M. Fitzpatrick - Assistant District Attorney, and Rasheada Caldwell - Common Counselor at Large.
The celebratory luncheon in the Persian Terrace featured a keynote address given by Onondaga Community College (OCC) President, Dr. Warren Hilton. We then honored our three local Champions of Diversity by publicly recognizing and inducting awardees into the YWCA Diversity Achievers Academy
The critical work YWCA does cannot be accomplished alone. With that said, we thank each and every one of you for believing in our mission and committing to our vision - especially our sponsors, whom this event would not be possible without.
2024 Stand Against Racism Walk
The Walk to End Racism is a crucial step we can all take together towards eliminating racism.
This event took place on Tuesday, April 23rd, with the walk starting from the YWCA Main Office Building (401 Douglas Street) and concluding at City Hall (233 E. Washington Street).
By uniting to address issues, understand complexities, and implement solutions, we have the power to transform Central New York for the better.
